Why Are People Afraid to Ask for Help?

Asking for help is surprisingly difficult for most people. It is hard to GET what you need if you don’t let anyone KNOW what you need. I would seem that asking for help would be a “no-brainer.”

However, most people are afraid to ask for help for any number of reasons, including the following:

1. Fear of rejection. What if the other person says no? I don’t want to be embarrassed.
2. Fear of failure. What if I ask for help and the other person tries to help and they can’t?
3. Fear of showing myself as weak. If I ask for help what is the other person going to think of me – that I can’t do this on my own?
4. Fear of “owing the other person.” If I ask someone for help and they help me, I will be in their debt. What if they want me to do something that I don’t want to do?
5. Wanting to blame others for my failure. Some people have a habit of sabotaging themselves and then pointing the finger at other people for not helping them. We say (and think) we would have succeeded if only someone else had helped (even if we didn’t ask them).

This fear is real, but it is irrational. As famed hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, aptly once stated: “You Miss 100% Of The Shots You Don’t Take.
